Crusade For Children
The Crusade for Children is a community wide event, which benefits children of the Kentuckiana Area. Collections for Crusade are done throughout the year by many fire departments and organizations through bake sales, dances, yard sales and many other events, with largest collections concentrated to the week prior to "Crusade Sunday".
One form of collection that begins months prior to the Crusade are small collection cans that are placed in businesses throughout the District. These cans are set near cash registers in restaurants, convenience stores and other businesses that attract large flow of retail customers. The cans are monitored and emptied as needed.
Camp Taylor, as well as all Volunteer Departments in the Kentuckiana Area, are well organized at the start of Crusade Week. Many preparations go into the organizing of collections, starting with the letters to business owners in the District. These letters solicit donations of money as well as food from restaurants to feed workers. Camp Taylor begins its week of collections by visiting these businesses in the District.
As the week progresses, road blocks are set up at key traffic areas during peak hours and these run through the end of the week.
Door to door collections finalize the process with volunteers consisting of firefighters, spouses, children and friends. Every door in the residential sections of the District and surrounding areas are knocked on for collection.
